The American Chemical Sociaty (ACS)
released JACS beta last
month. JACS beta is a testing website for the Journal of the American Chemical
Society (JACS), the flagship of the ACS.
JACS beta provides Virtual Issues
with featured papers. Each paper is highlighted with a title image and
a summary from a peer. It also gives downloadable presentations
(PowerPoint slides) and audio
contents (podcast) for special articles. But until now, there is
only one PPT file. It does not look so good. It seems combined with
some molecule structure images that cut from printable manuscript
rashly. The podcast service feels well, but perhaps it is not so
popular among chemists (see the poll results on the JACS beta website).

The Earthquake

It's terrible! The building was strongly tremoring, it maken me feel
dizzy and jolty when the quake happenning on May 12. After waking to the
fact, I shouted loudly and asked everyone to flee to the outside, then cut
the power and ran to the downstairs ...
But when I see the kids in the photo now, they so calmly makes me feel
small and helpless then. The crouched pupils are buried under the
rubble, with red cravats still around their necks. I would rather
believe that they are in their deep sleep and don't like anyone to
interrupt them. They could wake up and be laughing and playing in
another world.

Gmail 附件上限升至 20M

最近，Google 把 Gmail 邮件的 附件上限
从 10M 提高到
20M。虽然 10M 上限比较通用，但 Gmail 还是给了一个方便，小于 20M 的附
件可以不再分割发送了。
但要注意收件人的邮箱能否接收同样大小的附件。

Unix 体验中心

有个网站：Unix 体验中心，主要
为国内用户提供 Unix 和类 Unix 操作环境。在网站注册后，可以 SSH 登录到运
行 Solaris、FreeBSD、Fedora 或 Ubuntu 的服务器。服务器提供 C/C++、Java、
Fortran、Perl、Python、Ruby 和 Common Lisp 等开发环境。还可以从内网登录
龙芯计算机（龙芯 CPU 、Debian Linux for MIPS 操作系统）体验一下。龙芯计
算机配置较低（CPU 主频 666M、内存 256M），所以只在内网开放登录。
所有服务器的缺省语言编码设置为 zh_CN.GBK。目前为个人用户提供 20M 存储空
间（以后有可能提高到 50M），不提供 email、homepage 等服务。

科顿去世了

2007年2月20日，德克萨斯农机(TAMU)的科顿(F. Albert Cotton)去世了。他在世
76年，做了50年无机，指导博士116名，发表论文1600多篇。他在原子轨道成键和
谱学方面工作突出。他的书 Chemical Applications of Group Theory
和 Advanced Inorganic Chemistry 被译成多种语言，数次再版，影响
广泛。
科顿是个有趣的人。他发 paper 有个习惯，署名按姓氏字母排序（呵呵，Cotton
）。做 Math/CS/EE 的不少人有这样的习惯，做化学的极少这样排序。他有很多荣
誉博士或荣誉教授头衔，除了诺贝尔奖，他一生所获奖项无数，甚至以自己的名字
设立奖项。有意思的是，科顿奖的第一位获奖者是科顿本人。
